Start with a direction, not a demand.
Bring a few references and explain what you like about each one: the line weight, the feeling, the composition. Your artist can use that information to create something suited to your body and their practice.
Say what matters most.
If your tattoo marks a person or a memory, share the meaning you want it to carry. If you simply love the image, that is enough too. Be clear about what is essential and what you are open to changing.
Keep your questions together.
Ask how the level of detail relates to your proposed size. Discuss the placement, the artist’s process, scheduling, and costs directly with the studio. Write down anything you want to remember.
Leave space for the stencil.
A screen preview can help you prepare, but your artist’s stencil is the next important conversation. Review the position and lettering carefully before agreeing to proceed.
